The Power of Simple

The Power of Simple

A Plastic Planet’s believes in plain speaking. It’s either plastic, or it’s not plastic.

Somehow plastic has become a very complicated issue and it suits those that don’t want change to complicate it even further. Our goal is to bring a straight-talking clarity to the world of plastic, using language that everyone relates to. Bravo for plain English!

SINGLE-MINDED FOCUS

SINGLE-MINDED FOCUS

Of all the plastic made in the world in 2018, approximately 40% was used for packaging. This is our first target. We only need to walk into any store to see our involuntary and total addiction to plastic. When there are so many alternatives already available, it is absolutely wrong to continue to use plastic for such a temporary purpose. It is simply a misuse of this miracle material. If we can stop plastic packaging, imagine how much plastic we are preventing going into our ocean, soil and air. That alone is a huge turn off of the plastic tap and will lead to innovation making it possible to reduce plastic in all areas.

WE REPRESENT THE PUBLIC

WE REPRESENT THE PUBLIC

Our campaigns are simply about giving the public choice. Right now we have no choice but to buy our daily products in plastic. In an age when we are given choice for everything – fat-free, gluten-free, dairy-free, meat-free – we would like the choice to buy plastic-free. We buy what we are sold. We now want the brands and retailers to simply sell us something different.

NO BLAME, NO GUILT

NO BLAME, NO GUILT

We are all plastic addicts. We have all created this plastic pollution disaster together. This is not a time for finger pointing. We have sleepwalked into this self-made nightmare and we now need to fast-track out of it. Together. We call for collaboration between all Governments, industry and the public. Let us not just consider competitive advantage but open source all new solutions so we can work together to accelerate the pace of essential change.

PLASTIC RECYCLING ISN’T WORKING

PLASTIC RECYCLING ISN’T WORKING

In 2018 only 9% of plastic was recycled in UK; in USA it was less than 5%. We can no longer hide behind the myth that we can recycle our way out of this crisis. Over half the plastic waste from many relatively rich countries is actually exported, often to developing countries who do not have the infrastructure to cope with it. We are sending our plastic trash to some of the poorest people in the world in the name of ‘recycling’. This is ‘waste imperialism’ and has to stop.

THERE SHOULD BE NO SUCH THING AS WASTE

THERE SHOULD BE NO SUCH THING AS WASTE

True circularity for plastic is not about recycling. It’s a total rethink on how we go from our current model of take, make and waste to a new model of take, make and never throw away. True circular products do not have any waste; everything is captured and reused. We believe in the future of ‘refill and reuse’ as a major part of the solution to our waste crisis. Humans are the only living species on the planet who create waste.

THE SOIL-TO-SOIL CYCLE

THE SOIL-TO-SOIL CYCLE

Predictions for 2050 indicate there will be insufficient nutrients in our topsoil to grow crops in the UK. Worldwide forecasts are similar. Instead of fearing compostable packaging to replace plastic; why aren’t we radically reinventing our entire waste management systems - back to the true 'Circular Economy' of Nature? Compostable materials to package our food can be thrown away with our food waste; collected (vital piece of the puzzle); treated properly to make compost which carry nutrients back into our hungry soils … We broke this perfect circle during the industrial revolution. Recycling plastic used for food, does not fit into a circular economy; it is downcycled with most ending up in the environment. The ‘circle’ for plastic is always a downward spiral.

LEGISLATION AND TAXATION IS ESSENTIAL

LEGISLATION AND TAXATION IS ESSENTIAL

We need our Governments to step up and show leadership. We live in a time of declared climate emergency. Plastic is the gateway to climate change; using vast quantities of fossil fuels. Powerful lobbying from the fossil fuel industry cannot be allowed to delay laws and fiscal deterrents to continue on this plastic waste-strewn path.

PRO-BUSINESS FOR SCALABLE, GLOBAL SOLUTIONS

PRO-BUSINESS FOR SCALABLE, GLOBAL SOLUTIONS

Often niche new brands lead the way but to have the essential urgent impact, we need the biggest global businesses to act faster. We believe in a new kind of activism that ignites business from within vs attacking from the outside. As entrepreneurs ourselves, we believe in the power of business to change the world. That is why we work with some of the biggest players like Unilever to help them change faster, keeping all on task and championing those businesses who are doing the right thing. Change is difficult, inconvenient and sometimes costly as we pay it forward to benefit later. But it is absolutely essential and we exist at A Plastic Planet to accelerate the pace of change at all levels.

WE MUST NOT DEMONISE PLASTIC

WE MUST NOT DEMONISE PLASTIC

Decades ago, man invented a miracle material and called it plastic. This material is extraordinary because it is really a bi-product from fossil fuels; extremely adaptable, flexible and there are thousands of different chemical additives combined with polymers for different uses. Plastic is also indestructible; dangerous when released into the environment with far reaching possible health affects to many species including humans. Over the last few decades plastic has become the default material for far too many uses. Instead of respecting this miracle material, we have treated it like rubbish. This is not the fault of plastic, it is our fault to depend on it for the wrong uses.
